Staff

BO/Gun

A bo is a Japanese long staff weapon used in Japanese martial arts. The bo is usually made of tapered hard wood, such as white oak, bamboo, or, in some cases for training purposes or for a different style, rattan. Sometimes it is made of or plated with metal for extra strength.

The Chinese word gun refers to a long Chinese staff weapon used in Chinese martial arts. Traditionally, the gun is made out of a material called wax wood, rather than bamboo as many people might think. Wax wood is strong, yet flexible, making it ideal as a material for the gun. The gun is fashioned with one thick end as the base and a thinner end near the tip, and is cut to be about the same height as the user. Today, more modern versions may be purchased made with metal and rubber parts.

Double Staff

Double staff creates a variety of patterns and effects with two stave’s by combining many different types of motion.

Contact Staff

Contact staff is an exciting and creative form of staff spinning. Contact staff emphasizes manipulation of the staff so it travels smoothly on the body, and incorporates the entire body. Baton twirlers will find that contact staff is similar to baton. In contact staff one would manipulate the staff with ones neck, head, shoulder, back, leg, elbow and or any other part of the body.

Three-section staff

The Three-Sectional Staff, Triple Staff, Three-part Staff, Sansetsukon in Japanese, or originally Sanjiegun, is a Chinese flail weapon that consists of three wooden or metal staffs connected by metal rings or rope. Also known in Japanese as sansetsukon or sanchuck, the weapon is also known as a “coiling dragon staff,” or in Chinese as a “pan long gun”. A more complicated version of the two section staff, the stave’s can be spun to gather momentum resulting in a powerful strike, or their articulation can be used to strike over or around a shield or other defensive block.
